"SHE’S TRYING TO KILL YOU!"

Part 1

"ARE YOU OUT OF YOUR MIND?!"

The music inside the ballroom was loud enough to make the crystal chandeliers tremble.

Glasses clinked.

Cameras flashed.

Politicians laughed beside billionaires like they had all rehearsed it before walking in.

Women in diamond necklaces turned their faces toward the lights, posing beside marble pillars while waiters slid through the crowd with silver trays that looked more expensive than most people’s yearly salaries.

This was the biggest charity gala in New York City.

That was what the banners said.

“Hope for Tomorrow.”

“Saving Lives Together.”

But the camera kept catching the same thing—

smiles held too long.

hands reaching for attention.

people turning whenever a lens moved past.

Nobody seemed to be there for charity.

They were there to be seen.

And in the middle of the grand hall stood the man everyone wanted near them.

Ethan Caldwell.

CEO of Caldwell Pharmaceuticals.

Worth twelve billion dollars.

The newspapers called him “America’s Medical Savior.”

Online, people called him “The King of Healthcare.”

Tonight, he looked calm.

Almost relaxed.

For the first time in weeks, Ethan Caldwell was smiling.

Beside him stood Victoria, his wife, in a silver gown that shimmered under the golden ballroom lights.

Every camera seemed to find her.

Every angle made them look perfect.

Perfect couple.

Perfect life.

Perfect image.

Then a waiter stepped in.

A crystal glass.

Orange-colored juice.

Placed into Ethan’s hand.

Victoria smiled softly, close enough for the nearby guests to hear.

“To another successful year.”

Ethan raised the glass.

The crowd around them began to applaud.

Phones lifted.

Faces turned.

The moment looked polished—

expensive—

safe.

Then—

CRASH!

A young maid rushed forward and slapped the glass straight out of Ethan’s hand.

Hard.

So hard it burst across the marble floor.

The orange drink spread between shattered crystal.

The ballroom froze.

The music stopped.

Hundreds of guests turned at once.

The maid stood there, breathing fast, like she had just crossed a line she could never step back from.

Barely twenty-two.

Cheap maid uniform.

Messy hair.

Terrified eyes.

Victoria’s face changed first.

The smile disappeared.

Rage took over.

“How dare you spill his drink?!”

Whispers broke through the room.

Low.

Sharp.

Everywhere.

Security guards started moving closer.

Ethan stared down at the broken glass, stunned.

Then his head snapped toward the maid.

“Are you out of your mind?!”

The maid looked at him.

Her lips trembled.

Her hands shook.

But she did not run.

“Sir… your drink was tampered with.”

Silence hit the ballroom like a door slamming shut.

Victoria laughed.

Cold.

“What rubbish is this?”

The maid swallowed hard.

Then she looked directly at Ethan.

Not at the guards.

Not at the crowd.

At him.

“Sir… your wife is the one who—”

“ENOUGH!”

Victoria screamed so loudly the entire room flinched.

“You filthy liar!”

Security grabbed the maid by both arms.

Hard.

Her shoulders jerked back.

The crowd pushed away like she was contagious.

Phones rose higher.

Red recording dots blinked everywhere.

Victoria stood in the center of it all, furious, shaking, pointing straight at the girl.

“Get her out of here.”

The maid twisted against the guards.

Her voice cracked.

“She’s trying to k*** you!”

The room went still again.

Not quiet.

Still.

Even the guests holding champagne forgot to move.

Victoria’s face went pale for half a second.

Just half.

But Ethan saw it.

The camera caught it too—

that tiny slip,

that flash of fear,

then the mask coming back too late.

Ethan raised one hand.

Security froze.

Victoria turned toward him fast.

“Ethan, this girl is insane.”

But Ethan was not looking at her anymore.

He was looking at the maid.

Her name tag trembled on her chest.

LILY.

“How do you know my drink was poisoned?”

Lily swallowed.

Her breathing shook so badly she could barely speak.

“Because I saw her do it.”

Gasps moved through the ballroom.

One wave.

Then another.

Victoria stepped forward.

“That is absurd.”

Lily kept her eyes on Ethan.

“She poured something into the glass when nobody was looking. I was serving near the table.”

“She’s lying,” Victoria snapped. “She wants money. That is all this is.”

Ethan’s jaw tightened.

His eyes dropped to the shattered crystal on the marble floor.

The orange juice had spread in a thin, ugly pool beneath his shoes.

Then he looked at security.

“Lock the doors.”

The ballroom broke open.

People shouted.

Guests turned toward the exits.

A senator near the champagne tower said, “You can’t lock us in here.”

Someone whispered, “Yo… this is getting bad.”

Victoria moved closer to Ethan, lowering her voice, but the closest phones still caught every word.

“Do not embarrass us over some maid.”

Ethan did not answer.

He knelt beside the broken glass.

Slowly.

Carefully.

He reached toward the spilled juice.

Victoria grabbed his wrist.

Fast.

Too fast.

The whole room saw it.

Ethan looked up at her.

For ten years, this woman had stood beside him in photos, interviews, hospital openings, charity galas, board meetings.

Perfect smile.

Perfect wife.

Perfect partner.

Now her hand was locked around his wrist like she was stopping him from touching evidence.

And there was fear in her eyes.

Real fear.

Ethan stood slowly.

“Let go.”

Victoria released him.

Her lips parted, but nothing came out.

Lily spoke again from between the guards.

“She’s been meeting someone secretly for months.”

A champagne glass slipped from a woman’s hand.

It hit the marble and shattered.

Everyone flinched.

Lily’s eyes filled with tears.

“My brother worked in your company.”

Ethan turned.

“What?”

“He died after testing one of your drugs.”

The words landed heavy.

No music.

No laughter.

Just cameras recording rich faces losing color.

“They said it was an accident,” Lily whispered. “But he found something before he died.”

Victoria exploded.

“This is insane! Ethan, she is making up stories because she wants money!”

Lily shook her head.

“He found documents. Patients were dying during clinical trials.”

Ethan’s expression changed.

Not anger now.

Shock.

A deeper kind.

Lily kept going, even as her voice broke.

“He was going to expose everything.”

Victoria grabbed Ethan’s arm again.

“Do not listen to her.”

But the cameras had shifted.

So had the crowd.

Nobody was watching Lily like a crazy maid anymore.

They were watching Victoria.

The silver gown.

The perfect hair.

The sweat forming at her forehead.

“My brother said somebody inside the company was covering up deaths,” Lily said.

Victoria opened her mouth to shout.

But Ethan spoke first.

Quiet.

Deadly.

“…what is she talking about?”

Victoria froze.

One second.

Two.

Three.

The silence became louder than any scream.

Then an older man near the back stepped forward.

His hand was raised.

His face looked drained.

“She’s telling the truth.”

The camera swung toward him.

People recognized him at once.

Dr. Raymond Hale.

Former research director at Caldwell Pharmaceuticals.

The man who had vanished from public view six months earlier after what the company called a “personal resignation.”

Victoria looked like she had seen a ghost.

Dr. Hale walked forward slowly.

Every shoe tap echoed.

“They buried the deaths,” he said. “Patients died during testing. Reports were altered.”

Ethan stared at him.

“You knew?”

Dr. Hale’s face twisted with shame.

“I tried to stop it.”

Victoria pointed at him.

“You bitter old coward.”

But nobody moved to defend her.

Not one person.

Dr. Hale looked directly at Ethan.

“You were never supposed to find out.”

Ethan staggered back half a step.

The billionaire.

The king.

The man everyone came to impress.

Suddenly he looked like the floor had disappeared beneath him.

“All this time…” he whispered.

Victoria rushed closer.

“Ethan, listen to me—”

He turned on her.

“Did you poison my drink?”

The question cut the room open.

Victoria stared at him.

Her eyes filled.

Then tears spilled down her face.

Someone near the front whispered, “Oh my God…”

Victoria lowered herself into a chair like her legs had stopped working.

“You don’t understand,” she muttered.

Ethan looked sick.

“Answer me.”

Victoria laughed through tears.

Bitter.

Broken.

Ugly.

“Because you were going to destroy everything.”

The ballroom held its breath.

Victoria looked around at the guests, at the phones, at the judgment finally landing on her.

“The company was collapsing. Investors were pulling out. Lawsuits were coming.”

Her voice rose.

“You would have confessed. You would have ruined all of us.”

Ethan’s face hardened.

“So you tried to k*** me?”

Victoria’s tears turned angry.

“You were too weak to survive in this world!”

People backed away from her.

Slowly.

Like she had become dangerous in front of them.

Security moved in tighter.

Then Lily lifted one shaking hand.

Everyone turned.

From inside her sleeve, she pulled out a small flash drive.

Black.

Tiny.

Enough to ruin everything.

“My brother hid this before he died.”

Dr. Hale went pale.

Ethan took the drive from her fingers.

The room erupted.

Journalists rushed forward.

Guests screamed questions.

Security pushed bodies back.

Victoria stood suddenly, wild-eyed.

“Give me that.”

Ethan stepped away from her.

His disgust was plain now.

No performance.

No cameras needed.

The woman he had trusted.

The woman beside him every night.

A stranger.

Sirens cut through the chaos outside.

Blue and red lights flashed across the glass windows.

Police officers stormed into the ballroom moments later.

The crowd split open.

An officer approached Ethan.

“Mr. Caldwell, we received reports of attempted poisoning.”

Ethan looked at Victoria for a long moment.

Then he said it.

Cold.

Final.

“She’s the one you want.”

Victoria broke completely.

“You can’t do this to me!”

The officers grabbed her arms.

She kicked against the marble.

Her silver gown dragged across the broken glass.

“I BUILT THIS COMPANY TOO!”

Nobody defended her.

Not the politicians.

Not the billionaires.

Not the women who had smiled beside her for photos fifteen minutes earlier.

They watched her get dragged through the same ballroom that had worshipped her.

Phones captured every second.

The perfect image was dead.

Destroyed in minutes.

Victoria twisted back one final time.

“You’ll lose everything!”

Ethan did not shout.

He did not chase her.

He only looked at the flash drive in his hand.

Then at Lily.

The maid everyone ignored.

The girl everyone wanted removed.

The only person who had saved his life.

“Why risk everything for me?” he asked.

Lily wiped her face with the back of her hand.

“Because my brother deserved justice.”

Silence returned.

Different this time.

Not shock.

Not fear.

Judgment.

Outside, reporters were already gathering.

Tomorrow’s headlines would destroy empires.

Stocks would crash.

Lawsuits would explode.

And deep inside that glittering ballroom full of fake smiles and rich lies, one broken glass still lay scattered across the marble floor.
