Chapter 1
At the Denver Airport, my daughter-in-law put her hand on my shoulder and said, "Move. You didn't pay for this trip."
She thought I was just some old woman standing in her way.
I reached for the card in my purse. And everything about how that family saw me changed in a single second.
Three Months Earlier
My son Daniel called me on a Tuesday. He never called on Tuesdays.
"Mom, we need help with the family vacation," he said. "Everything's been tight since the house project."
I understood what he meant. I always understood what he meant.
"I'm looking at flights for everyone," he continued. "Six of us. You, Dad, me, Jessica, the kids. Hawaii. Ten days."
"How much?" I asked.

"About forty-three thousand. With the packages."
I didn't tell him I could cover it. I just said, "That sounds nice."
