I came home from my business trip a day early, only to find my fiancée cornering my mother in the kitchen.

"Sign this NDA and go to the nursing home, or I'll make sure your son never speaks to you."

That's what I heard when I opened the front door.

Her name was Rachel. My mother's name was Linda.

And I was standing in the hallway with my suitcase still on my shoulder, frozen like an idiot.

I work in construction management. My job takes me all over the state. Three-day trips, sometimes five. Rachel and I had been together for two years. Engaged for eight months.
