"Would you like a rose, ma'am?"

"Would you like a rose, ma'am?" Victoria looked up from her wine glass. A little girl stood beside her table, holding a basket of red roses. She looked no older than nine, with a high ponytail, a loose beige sweater, and clear, curious eyes. Victoria gave a polite smile. "Sure." The girl placed one rose on the table. Then her eyes dropped to Victoria's hand. A gold rose-shaped ring sat on Victoria's finger, with a red ruby in the center. The girl smiled softly. "Your ring looks just like my mom's." Victoria's smile faded. "No, sweetheart. This is my family's ring." The girl tilted her head. "Is there a name inside it?" Victoria went still. The girl said, "Rosewood." The restaurant noise seemed to vanish. No stranger should know that name. Victoria leaned forward, her voice shaking. "Where is your mother?"
