Chapter 3

The Woman Who Tried to Keep Emma in Sight

Emma remained beside the chair where Victoria had shoved her, her knees beginning to tremble beneath the stiff skirt of her uniform while she kept them locked and pressed both shoes firmly against the floor, and the red mark around her wrist deepened where Victoria’s fingers had caught the fabric as the ballroom’s conditioned air moved across the torn edge of her glove.

Victoria watched Marlene Pierce approach from the service doors, then said, “She stays where we can see her,” with one hand gathering the damp emerald fabric at the front of her gown, as though the authority attached to her name and donations might still extend across Daniel’s staff, the evidence barriers, and the security team now moving around her.

Daniel did not raise his voice when he answered, “You do not supervise my staff,” and the restraint in those words carried farther than shouting could have carried, because it left Victoria nothing theatrical to oppose while several guests lowered their eyes and the silver chair legs reflected the pale strips of temporary barriers being placed around the table.

When Victoria replied that she was a guest in his house, Daniel neither apologized nor softened the boundary he had drawn, and Emma saw Victoria’s fingers tighten against the wet folds of her gown while Nolan continued directing the collection process without seeking her permission, approval, or account of what the video had shown.

The Phone That Became Evidence

Daniel handed Emma’s phone to Nolan and instructed him to make a forensic copy before returning the original as soon as possible, and the device looked strangely ordinary in Nolan’s gloved hand, its dark screen holding a corridor recording whose metadata could establish when it had been captured, where it had come from, and whether anyone had altered it afterward.

Nolan turned toward Emma rather than assuming that Daniel’s authority included her private property, and when he asked, “Do I have your permission?” she blinked once before answering, only for him to request that she state the consent clearly so the room, the witnesses, and whatever official record followed would contain no ambiguity.

“I give permission for you to copy the video and preserve its metadata,” Emma said while flexing the fingers inside her torn glove, and the words left her throat more steadily than her thumb had moved across the screen earlier, because the evidence was no longer resting solely inside a phone that could be dismissed as the unauthorized possession of a waitress.

Victoria looked from Nolan to Daniel and asked whether he was truly allowing a waitress to dictate procedure, but Daniel answered, “No, I’m preventing you from dictating it,” and the quiet response drew no applause or dramatic reaction, only the downward movement of several faces as the social order of the evening shifted without anyone announcing that it had changed.
