Chapter 5
Three Months Later
We're married now. Small ceremony. My mother planned the flowers. Rachel cried during the vows — real tears, not performance.
Marcus is not at this wedding. I blocked him for two months after the kitchen incident. We've been slowly rebuilding, but it's not the same. It might never be the same.
My mother calls him once a week. On speaker. With me in the room. She hates it. She does it anyway.
Rachel keeps the NDA in a drawer. I asked her to throw it out. She said no. I think it reminds her of what she almost became.
Sometimes I think about that moment in the kitchen. The way my mother's hands shook around that glass. The way Rachel's voice went flat and businesslike. The way I set my suitcase down and walked toward them.
If I hadn't come home early, she would've signed it.
She would've moved into some facility with no phone, no visitors, no life. Because she was tired. Because Rachel was right — she'd been hurting us. But also because Rachel made it feel like a choice when it wasn't one.
My mother didn't deserve that. Not even for what she did.
But I don't think Rachel deserved that either — the version of herself she became in that kitchen.
We're better now. Both of them. The therapist helped.

And the NDA? I kept it after all. Folded it back out, read every line, and put it in a file labeled "Don't Let This Happen Again." A reminder of what happens when love and fear get tangled up in the same house.
