Chapter 1

**I overheard my son call me a burden on a phone call he forgot to end — and what he said about my house made my blood run cold**

The phone didn't beep.

That's the only reason I heard any of it.

My son called me that Tuesday afternoon, the way he always does. Quick check-in. "How are you, Mom?" The usual.

We talked for maybe three minutes.

He said he had to go. Said goodbye.

I set my phone down on the kitchen counter and went back to folding laundry.

But the call didn't end.

**The Line Stayed Open**

I didn't notice at first.

I was halfway through a basket of towels when I heard his voice again.

Faint. Tinny. Coming from my phone.

I walked over.

The screen still showed his name. 00:04:12. 00:04:13.

The call was still connected.

"...yeah, she's fine," he was saying. "Same as always."

A woman's voice. His wife, Emma. I couldn't make out her words, but I heard the tone — sharp, impatient.

"I know," my son said. "I know."

I should have hung up.

I didn't.

**What I Heard**

"She's a burden," he said.

I froze.

"Once the house is dealt with, we can finally live."

Emma said something else. He laughed. Not a cruel laugh. Just...casual.

Like they'd had this conversation a hundred times.

"It's worth $875,000 easy," he continued. "Maybe more if we stage it right. That's enough to pay off everything and still have a cushion."

My house.

May you like

They were talking about my house.

The one my husband and I bought thirty-two years ago. The one we raised our son in. The one I've lived in alone since Richard died.
