Chapter 3
The Headlines
Two days after Liam died, the story became public.
A news site ran a headline about a Mercer heir dying under a secret identity. My photo was beneath it, along with the words pregnant widow.
Reporters gathered outside my house.
Then another article appeared. It showed Liam with Mara Ellis and claimed he had been keeping a secret relationship.
Someone had access to the private things from his life.
Dr. Barrett called me.
"There was one other person."
Twenty minutes later, Samuel Price, Liam’s attorney, called.
"Nathan Mercer is already on his way to you."
"How does he know where I live?"
Samuel paused.
"He knew where Liam was."
At 8:17 that night, a black SUV stopped across the street.
Nathan walked through the reporters and came straight to my porch. He had Liam’s eyes.
I opened the door before he knocked.
"You knew him as Liam Carter?"
"You knew he was married?"
"He never told me you existed."
Something inside me cracked.
Then Nathan said the thing I was least prepared to hear.
"I think Liam was murdered."
"My husband died from an illness."
"That is what he told me too."
Nathan said Liam had called him six weeks before his death. The diagnosis was real, but Liam believed someone had accelerated it.
Nathan pulled out an envelope.
"He told me not to open this unless his identity became public after he died."
Inside was a single note.
Find Emily before she finds Mara.
And whatever you learn about Grace, remember I believed I was saving her.
I showed Nathan the paternity report.
He read it in my kitchen and went completely still.
"Mara was pregnant?"
He thought she had left because she hated him.
Arthur had discovered their relationship after Mara’s brother, Daniel Ellis, died from a faulty Mercer device. Nathan said Daniel’s death was what finally pushed him to testify against Arthur.
Mara had come back once during the investigation. She and Nathan spent one night together.
By morning, she was gone.
She had already been pregnant.
Grace Finds Us
We did not find Mara first.
Grace found us.
She was standing across the street when Nathan and I left Samuel Price’s office the next afternoon.
Nathan saw her and lost all the color in his face.
Grace looked directly at him.
"You look like the pictures."
Mara stepped out of a parked car behind her.
Fourteen years stood between her and Nathan.
"You let me believe you hated me for fourteen years," Nathan said.
"I was trying to keep her alive."
We moved to a café before people on the sidewalk could start listening.
Mara told us Arthur had sent someone to her apartment after she gave investigators information about Daniel. Daniel had reported that his device was malfunctioning. He had received an offer of money to stay quiet.
She had a copy of his final voicemail.
When she learned she was pregnant, she went to Liam. Nathan had disappeared into witness-protection arrangements connected to the federal case.
"Liam said Arthur knew about the pregnancy," she said.
"He threatened to destroy me publicly. He said he would fight for custody and keep Nathan trapped in court for years."
Arthur also threatened Liam.
He told Liam that if he testified, he would expose Mara’s pregnancy and claim Nathan had manipulated evidence to avenge Daniel.
It could have destroyed the case against Arthur.
Liam helped Mara disappear. He thought he was saving all of them.
But he stole fourteen years from Nathan and Grace.
Then Mara told us Arthur had died four months earlier.
Liam became ill three months ago.
Arthur’s death had changed something. He had left behind a private trust, and Liam seemed to understand why.
The Warehouse
The online story kept getting uglier.
Reporters found Grace. Photos appeared of Nathan coming to my house. People accused Liam of hiding money from the families Mercer Medical had harmed.
Someone wrote that my baby would be born rich because other families had lost fathers.
I vomited in the kitchen sink after reading it.
The next morning, Dr. Barrett came to my house with additional toxicology results.
"Liam asked for testing," he said.
The extended panel showed repeated exposure to a compound once used in Mercer Medical manufacturing.
"Are you saying Arthur poisoned him?"
"No. Arthur was already dead."
"Then what are you saying?"
"That Liam was exposed to something which may have made his condition worse."
Nathan knew where the exposure happened.
One of the old Mercer Medical warehouses.
Liam had gone there six weeks before. Arthur had confessed that original records still existed there.
Nathan took out a flash drive Liam had sent him after the warehouse visit.
On the video, Liam stood in the dark building with folders in his hands.
"Nathan, if you’re watching this, I failed to come home."
The files proved Arthur kept monitoring device failures after the recall should have happened.
But they showed something else too.
Samuel Price had helped him bury the reports.
Samuel had altered correspondence, routed payments, and later helped Liam change his identity because keeping Liam hidden also kept Samuel’s role hidden.
Then Liam held up another document.
Three days before he died, Arthur changed his trust.
He named my unborn child as beneficiary.

Arthur Mercer was standing beside her.
