Chapter 5
The Marriage File
The deputy reached into the box again and opened a second folder, whose paper had yellowed slightly at the corners, while the scent of dust and old cardboard mixed with the rain-cooled air drifting through the doorway.
A typed label had been fixed to the front.
PROPERTY ACQUISITION STRATEGY.
My name appeared beneath it, and under my name was a date from six months before I had met Adrian, printed with the ordinary precision of an office record and preserved in a room his family had tried to seal beneath their home.
I looked toward my husband, searching his face for any sign that the file had surprised him, but he stood against the wall with his hands cuffed behind him and his gaze fixed somewhere below my shoulder.
The sequence assembled itself without anyone needing to explain it aloud: the hidden room, Lydia’s disappearance, the floor plan of my kitchen, the marked wall behind my pantry, and a strategy bearing my name before Adrian had supposedly entered my life by chance.
My marriage had not led the Caldwells to my condo, and their sudden insistence that Eleanor needed the property had not begun around that dining table, because the documents beneath the wine cellar showed that the house had been their objective before I had ever known Adrian existed.
The deputy carefully returned the floor plan to its folder and began securing the box as evidence, while officers moved Charles away from the table and his attorney spoke close to him in a voice too low for me to understand.
Outside, the night had turned colder, and when the paramedics finally rolled my stretcher toward the waiting ambulance, the wheels rattled softly across the threshold where rain had darkened the stone.
I carried no answer for what had once been hidden behind my pantry wall, nor could the documents tell me everything that had happened to Lydia, but they revealed the truth that had been withheld from me since before my first conversation with the man I married.

Adrian had known exactly who I was long before he introduced himself, because my marriage had never brought his family to my home; my home was the reason they had brought him to me.
