Chapter 5

The Wedding That Never Reached the Vows

The cathedral erupted—not with music or applause, but with voices colliding beneath the vaulted ceiling as guests rose, phones lifted higher, and the officiant stepped away from the altar while the meaning of Victoria’s question moved through the room.

Emma stayed beside Ethan.

No answer emerged from Charles, only the unmistakable fact that he had reacted before Victoria explained the birthmark—before she spoke of a missing daughter, before anyone else understood why a tiny swallow on Emma’s shoulder had turned him white.

Victoria did not attempt to touch Emma again.

She stood several feet away, tears slipping past the composure she had worn into the cathedral, while Emma remained covered by the jacket of the man she had come there to marry—the one person who had protected her when Victoria tried to strip away her dignity.

The vows were never spoken.

What began as Victoria’s attempt to prove that Emma did not belong had exposed the opposite before four hundred witnesses: the bride she rejected bore the exact birthmark of the daughter she had lost twenty-eight years earlier, Charles’s reaction suggested that the disappearance had never been the mystery Victoria believed it was, and Ethan’s place inside the Lancaster family had become the question no one in the cathedral could ignore.

The torn dress had not exposed Emma.

It had exposed them.
