Chapter 5

The Transfer That Spoke for Him

Hours later, Derek transferred nearly every dollar from their shared account, leaving exactly fifteen dollars behind, and Hannah stared at the balance while Emily’s breathing rose and fell in the bassinet beside her.

At first, the number looked like one final gesture of humiliation, a deliberate recreation of the bills he had pushed across the granite countertop while she was in labor, but Hannah had preserved the statements, the photographs, the messages, and the record of every transfer he assumed she would never understand.

Her attorney examined the timing of the withdrawals, the insurance activity, and the trail surrounding Derek’s supposed client dinner, and what began as one man’s effort to leave his wife stranded became evidence that his version of control had always depended on keeping her in the dark.
