I gave my son an emergency credit card years ago. Then my daughter-in-law told me she had used it to pay for a Christmas party, and I stopped pretending I had heard her wrong.
“My card?” I asked.
Priscilla stood across my kitchen island in a bright red dress, one hand pressed against her waist. A second earlier, she had been smiling.
Then the smile disappeared.
