Chapter 2
The Plan
I sat down that night and booked everything. Every flight, every hotel room, every rental car. Paid in full with my own card. The one I kept in my purse, the one Daniel never asked about because he assumed it was just a backup Visa.
I didn't tell anyone. I thought they deserved to have the experience of planning something together, even if I was the one footing the bill at the end.
The Morning of the Trip
Daniel and Jessica had been married for four years. In those four years, Jessica had never once asked me a question about my life. My job, my interests, my history. She treated me like furniture that occasionally blocked a hallway.
At Denver Airport, we were all standing in the check-in line. Jessica had earbuds in. She hadn't acknowledged my presence since we got in the car.
I was standing behind her with my bag. The line moved forward. I moved with it.
She turned around.
"Excuse me," she said. Not to me. To the person behind her. Then she saw me. "Move."
I stayed still.
She reached out and put her hand on my shoulder. Pushed me forward. Like I was a shopping cart.
"You didn't pay for this trip," she said. "So just stand back here. We don't need you holding up the line."
Daniel was looking at his phone. He didn't hear it.
I looked at her hand still resting on my shoulder. I looked at her face. She had that expression — the one that meant she had already decided I was less important than the conversation she wanted to have.
I reached into my purse. My fingers found the card.
