Chapter 2

**Six Hours Later**

We landed in Hawaii just after 4 p.m.

I ordered coffee in the airport lounge.

I switched my phone back on.

The screen flooded with notifications.

Twenty-three texts from Emily.

Eleven from Mom.

Nine from Dad.

More from Daniel, cousins, the wedding planner.

And one voicemail from a number I recognized immediately.

The venue manager.

Her message was only eighteen seconds long.

But those eighteen seconds explained everything Emily had been doing with my money while telling me to stay quiet and look small.

The voicemail was calm. Professional. Desperate.

"Ms. Carter, we need your authorization immediately. Your sister is insisting the reception proceed, but the final venue payment and catering guarantee are still under your corporate card. She says you approved additional charges. We cannot proceed without confirmation."

I replayed it twice.

Emily had not only demanded that I hide my success.

She had apparently planned to keep spending it.

The Manager

I called the venue first.

The manager answered on the second ring. Her relief was audible.

"Thank God. Are you on your way?"

"I'm in Hawaii."

Silence.

"I'll honor every expense I already approved in writing," I said. "But I will not authorize a single new charge, upgrade, or extension."

She exhaled.

Then she told me what Emily had been doing.

During the previous forty-eight hours, my sister had added premium champagne, another floral installation, late-night food service, and upgraded suites for six relatives.

She had told everyone the same thing.

"My sister will handle it."

The additional bill exceeded seventeen thousand dollars.
