Chapter 5
Emily
She called three days later.
Angry at first.
Then the anger gave way to something closer to exhaustion.
She admitted she had spent years comparing herself to me. She had started lying because Daniel's family made her feel insecure about her career.
"You always made everything look easy."
"I didn't need gratitude for every dollar," I said. "But I will never again finance a lifestyle while pretending I accomplished nothing so you can feel accomplished."
She apologized.
Not perfectly. Not dramatically.
But she apologized without adding "however."
Six Months Later
Emily visited my office for the first time.
She stood beside the glass wall overlooking our operations floor. Dozens of employees working beneath the company logo.
"I really didn't know," she whispered.
"You didn't want to know."
Our relationship did not return to normal because I no longer wanted the old normal.
We became more distant for a while.
Then slowly more honest.
I stopped paying her expenses.
She stopped asking.
What I Learned
I had boarded that flight thinking I was skipping one wedding.
What I was really leaving behind was a role I had played for years.
The successful sister who had to hide every success. Solve every financial problem. Then disappear before anyone felt uncomfortable.
Fifty-nine missed calls taught me something simple.
Being needed is not the same as being respected.
May you like
I stopped paying the price for confusing the two.
