Chapter 1
I lost my husband in a hospital room — but less than an hour later, his doctor stopped me with something Liam had hidden from me
The doctor caught up with me in the hospital corridor before I had even made it to the elevator.
I had just signed the last form. My hands were still numb from holding Liam’s hand while the machines went quiet.
Then Dr. Barrett said my name.
“Emily.”
I turned around.
He was holding a cream-colored envelope.
At first, I thought it was paperwork. Another form. Another thing I had to sign because death apparently comes with a stack of documents and no instructions for how to survive it.
But then I saw Liam’s handwriting on the front.
My stomach dropped.
Dr. Barrett held it out to me carefully.
“There’s something Liam made me promise to give you,” he said.
I could not move.
“What is it?”
I turned so quickly that the doctor nearly stepped back.
Less than an hour earlier, I had watched Liam die.
Now Dr. Barrett stood in the hospital corridor holding a cream-colored envelope with my husband’s handwriting across the front.

“There’s something Liam made me promise to give you,” he said. “But only after he was gone.”
My hands shook before I even reached for it.
