Chapter 4

The Question Victoria Could Not Answer

Daniel looked from the unfinished line to Victoria, whose hand had dropped beside her gown, and asked why she had tried to take it, keeping his voice low while Lily’s cheek stayed pressed against his collarbone.

“You knew this was in Lily’s bag?”

Victoria’s eyes moved toward the child instead of the envelope, and Lily lifted her face just enough to speak into the quiet foyer, explaining that she had taken it from Grandma’s sewing room because Grandma had said Mommy left it for Daddy.

Victoria’s voice sharpened.

What the Envelope Meant

Daniel stood with Rachel’s writing in his hand and Victoria in front of him—the woman he had planned to marry in six weeks—while the little floral handbag rested open on the marble between them, no longer a child’s keepsake but the place where something important had been concealed.
