Chapter 1
While Doctors Tried to Stop Her From Bleeding to Death, Her Husband Told Her to Take Their Newborn and Leave the Country — The Words He Said Next Left Her Staring at the Hospital Ceiling
The words reached her through the hospital noise with a terrible clarity, carrying across the distance between a woman bleeding beneath white sheets and the husband who had chosen that exact hour to say, “Take the baby and leave the country,” before adding that he would make sure she had enough money as long as she never came back into his life.
She had not yet held her newborn for long, and the room around her had narrowed into sharp smells of antiseptic and iron, the rubbery touch of medical tape against her skin, and the shrill pulse of a monitor that seemed determined to announce every second she might not survive, while his voice remained calm on the phone as if he were discussing a business arrangement rather than the life of his wife and child.
For three years, she had lived inside a marriage built from debts, family names, and obligations that had nothing to do with tenderness, and although she had learned to endure his distant dinners, his late arrivals, and the silence that followed every attempt to reach him, she had never imagined he would choose the moment doctors fought to save her life to sever every remaining tie.

Her hand moved toward the bassinet beside the bed, where the baby lay beyond her blurred vision, and her fingers tightened against the sheets as she tried to understand how a father could ask for a child to be taken across an ocean without even first asking whether that child had safely entered the world.
Then, through the line, she heard another woman laugh beside him—and what she heard after that made the hospital room feel colder than the night outside.
