Chapter 4

“Perfect,” I said.

Priscilla looked relieved.

“I’ll be away for Christmas,” I told her. “You and Dean can take care of the party yourselves.”

Her laugh came out fast.

Then she saw I was serious.

Before she could answer, Dean came in through the back door. Priscilla hurried to him and whispered in his ear.

He looked at me.

“Mom, people already made plans.”

“I know.”

“It’s Christmas.”

“Yes, Dean.”

Priscilla folded her arms.

“Tell her,” she said. “Everything is already booked. It’s all on her account.”

Dean went still.

For months, there had been charges on my statements that I could not explain. I had tried to be reasonable about it. I had tried to blame my memory instead of blaming someone close to me.

But I had saved every statement.

Every charge.

Every date.

Priscilla watched my hand move toward my purse, and something in her expression changed.

“Sylvia,” she said quietly. “It’s not what you think.”
