Chapter 2

Not Priscilla. Not for parties. Not for wine, flowers, rented tables, or a catered holiday designed to look perfect in photographs.

My name is Sylvia Grant. I’m sixty-eight, and for thirty years, Christmas happened at my house.

I bought the food. I cleaned the rooms. I put out extra towels and made sure there was something on the table for every person who came through my door.

By midnight, I was usually standing at the sink alone.

People remembered the music and the pictures. They remembered the food, too.

They never seemed to remember who paid for it.

Over time, the family gatherings became less like something I offered and more like something people expected. Thanksgiving. Easter. Birthdays.
