"Call an Uber if labor starts."
That was all I got.
No explanation. No argument. No apology.
Just those words.
For months, the hospital bag had been sitting there as a reminder that the baby could come at any time. I had packed it because that was what I was supposed to do. It was supposed to mean I was ready.
But I was not ready for that.

I was not ready to watch my husband prepare to leave on the exact morning I was supposed to be waiting for contractions, a phone call, or a rushed drive to the hospital.
I was not ready to see his suitcase pass my bag like mine did not matter.
