Chapter 3
What Vanessa Said
A door slammed somewhere behind the house.
The maid screamed.
Vanessa's expression changed. This time, she looked relieved.
I held up the certificate.
"How long have you known?"
"From the beginning."
"She's been dead for thirteen months."
"Yes."
"And you let me believe she was alive."
Vanessa picked up the cane from the floor. She didn't raise it. She just held it, turning it over in her hands.
"Your father wanted it that way."
"My father has been dead for two years."
"His estate hasn't."
Noah was standing in the kitchen doorway now, pale but steady.
"Uncle Dan, there's more in the drawer."
What Noah Found
I went back into the office.
Beneath the death certificate was a stack of printed emails. Messages I thought Claire had sent me over the last year.
Each one had a metadata header I'd never seen before.
Sent from: proxy relay 47-AC, authorized by V. Carter.
Vanessa had written every single one.
Beneath the emails was a legal document. A proxy authorization giving Vanessa full control over Claire's estate share until I formally requested a meeting with the executors.
My father's will had split his company three ways. One third to me. One third to Claire. One third held in trust until certain conditions were met.
If Claire was unreachable, her proxy could vote her shares.
If I believed Claire was alive and angry, I wouldn't ask questions.
Vanessa had been voting Claire's third for over a year.
I looked at Noah.
"How did you know to look?"
He pulled a key from his pocket.
"Aunt Claire gave it to me. The last time I saw her."
The Last Time
Noah was fourteen. He'd always been quiet, careful, the kind of kid who noticed things adults thought they'd hidden.
"It was right before she disappeared," he said. "She came to our house. Late. She didn't come inside. She just handed me this key through the car window and told me to keep it safe."
"Did she say why?"
"She said if anything happened to her, I should use it to open your office drawer. The one with the lock."
I looked at the drawer. I'd never locked it. I didn't even know it had a lock.
Noah crossed the room and pressed the key into a nearly invisible slot along the drawer's side panel.

A second compartment slid open beneath the main drawer.
Inside was a leather journal.
