Chapter 5
What I Did Next
I called the police from the office phone.
Vanessa didn't try to stop me. She just sat on the bench, holding the cane, staring at the floor.
When the officers arrived, I handed them the death certificate, the journal, and the printed emails.
Vanessa stood up slowly.
"You're really doing this."
"Yes."
"You're going to destroy everything."
"You already did that."
They took her in handcuffs. Lily watched from the top of the stairs, silent, her face pale.
Noah stood beside me in the doorway.
"I'm sorry, Uncle Dan."
"You did the right thing."
"Aunt Claire told me to wait. She said I'd know when it was time."
"Why today?"
"Because Vanessa was about to move the files. I heard her on the phone this morning. She was going to clear out your office this weekend."
What Happened After
Dr. Hale was arrested three days later. He admitted to falsifying the death certificate and helping Vanessa dispose of Claire's body.
They found her remains at the lake house, buried in the woods behind the property.
The land deal never went through. The board voted to suspend all new projects pending the investigation.
Vanessa was charged with manslaughter, fraud, and obstruction. Her trial is set for next spring.
Lily asks about her mother sometimes. I tell her the truth, in the simplest terms I can manage.
Your mother made a terrible mistake. She tried to hide it. And now she has to face what she did.
Noah still visits on weekends. He's quiet, careful, the same kid he's always been.
But he's not carrying Claire's secret anymore.
The Drawer
I keep the journal in my office now, in the same locked drawer where Noah found it.
Sometimes I open it and read Claire's last entry.
If something happens to me before then, Noah has the key. He'll know what to do.
She was right.
He did.
For thirteen months I thought my sister had abandoned me.
The truth was worse.
She tried to reach me. She tried to warn me.

And I believed the woman who killed her.
