Chapter 4

Claire's Journal

The first entry was dated fourteen months earlier.

Vanessa knows about the land deal. She knows I'm going to block it. I told her yesterday that I'd vote against the board proposal, and she looked at me like I'd signed my own death warrant. Maybe I have.

The next entry was two days later.

Dr. Hale called me this morning. He said he wanted to discuss my "mental health concerns." I don't have any mental health concerns. I think Vanessa put him up to this. She's trying to build a case that I'm unstable so she can challenge my proxy vote.

The final entry was dated the day before her death.

I'm meeting Daniel tonight at the lake house. I'm going to tell him everything. If something happens to me before then, Noah has the key. He'll know what to do.

I never went to the lake house that night.

Vanessa told me Claire had canceled. She said Claire had sent a text saying she needed space.

I believed her.

Vanessa's Explanation

I walked back into the hallway. Vanessa was sitting on the bench by the door, the cane across her lap.

"Tell me what happened."

She didn't look up.

"She was going to destroy everything your father built."

"That's not an answer."

"The land deal would have doubled the company's value. Claire wanted to block it because she didn't like the environmental impact. She was going to tank a fifty-million-dollar opportunity over a wetland."

"So you killed her."

"I didn't kill anyone."

"Then what happened?"

Vanessa finally looked at me.

"She fell."

The Lake House

Vanessa said she'd gone to the lake house that night instead of me.

She said she wanted to talk Claire out of blocking the vote.

"We argued on the dock," Vanessa said. "She told me I'd married you for the money. She told me I didn't care about the company, only what I could take from it. I pushed her. Not hard. Just enough to make her stop talking."

"And she fell."

"She hit her head on the boat cleat. I didn't mean for it to happen."

"But you let her die."

Vanessa didn't answer.

"You called Dr. Hale," I said. "You had him sign the death certificate. You made it look like an accident. And then you hid her body and started sending emails pretending to be her."

"I protected our family. I protected the company. I protected you."

May you like

"By lying to me for thirteen months."

"By keeping you out of it."
