Outside, his parents were waiting for him.
I could not stop thinking about that part.
They were already there. They already knew he was leaving. His suitcase was packed. This was not something he decided in the middle of an argument.
There had been a plan.

I stood beside my hospital bag while he stood beside his suitcase, and the difference between those two things felt bigger than anything I had ever understood about our marriage.
Then I looked toward the door, toward the car where his parents were waiting, and realized he was about to walk out without another word.
